This interactive workshop will offer participants an opportunity to reflect on situations they face or anticipate in cross-cultural supervisory relationships. The workshop will begin with a discussion in which participants name their cultural identities and describe how they affect their own experiences with supervision. Then the facilitators will provide a conceptual framework that presents elements of the supervisory relationship as they apply to cross cultural situations. Using this framework, the group will discuss their responses to vignettes presented in the training video “Challenges in Cross Cultural Supervision,” and apply the principles to their own experiences. Finally participants will create an “action plan” to address their most pressing cross-cultural dilemma.

Clinical Supervision within the Agency Context

Workshop: 9:00 AM-Noon

The practice of clinical supervision is altered and affected when it occurs in an agency setting. Supervisor/supervisee relationships change from collegial to more hierarchical, therapeutic discussions and decisions are influenced by potential fiscal ramifications, and various other supervisory duties erode the time set aside for supervision on clinical issues. Clinical supervisors are left feeling conflicted, knowing they need to attend to administrative duties but knowing clients and staff require the attention to clinical issues. This interactive workshop offers participants the opportunity to reflect on practicing clinical supervision while also attending to administrative tasks. The workshop begins with a didactic review of the research on this potential role conflict in agency-based clinical supervision, including evidence-based approaches to addressing these potentially conflictual issues. The workshop ends with a group discussion about how to apply these new concepts to participants’ supervisory practice.
