Training Programs
2010 - 2011

The Supervision Institute will offer a total of 10 hours of training, including two workshops and two small group sessions in which participants will have the opportunity to discuss supervisory issues.  All of the training meets the requirements under the State of Minnesota Board of Social Work law, effective August 2011, for those who provide supervision for licensure.  Supervision Institute offerings are not sequential.  Participants may choose to register for any or all events described below.

“Who am I?  Reflecting on Self in Supervision”

The most important tool for practitioners is their use of self.  Part of the job of the supervisor is to help supervisees use this tool to best serve their clients.   This workshop will consider how the supervisor’s awareness and use of self can be used intentionally as a tool for developing depth in both the supervisory and the practitioner-client relationships.  In addition to didactic information, individual and small group activities will help participants integrate this material into their supervisory practice.

“Integrating Mindfulness for Skillful Supervision”

Mindfulness has emerged over the past few years as a critical paradigm in social work practice. The concepts of mindfulness, effective in direct social work practice, can also lead to skillful and compassionate social work supervision. This session will begin with a discussion of the paradigm and concepts of mindfulness drawing on both presenters and participants’ knowledge of this topic. The session will then present current research and thought on how mindfulness has been connected to supervision. Finally, the session will explore connections between mindfulness and the use of self, the supervisory relationship, personal reactivity and conflict. Applications of mindfulness will be integrated during the session.
