
The Area of Emphasis in Aging will bring together MSW students, faculty and community members in a two-year program of course work, practicum, research, and community partnership. Up to ten MSW students will be selected each year to be Area of Aging (AEA) Scholars. Participation in the program includes:
The AEA Scholars program was piloted through a generous grant from the Council on Social Work Education Gero-Ed Center Specialized Gerontology Program, and is sustained through support from the School of Social Work.

The Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) is a national initiative that recruits and trains the next generation of social workers who specialize in aging. With fewer than 3% of social work students currently specializing in aging, the HPPAE seeks to address the need for 70,000 “aging savvy” professional social workers by 2020.
The HPPAE program provides an opportunity to explore geriatric social work, as part of the foundation year of the MSW curriculum. Specially, the program offers:
HPPAE was originally launched with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the MetLife Foundation and developed and administered by the Social Work Leadership Institute at The New York Academy of Medicine.
