Field Education

Welcome to the Field Education Program Website

Field is called "the heart of social work education" and our heart-felt commitment to field students and agency field instructors is strong and vibrant.  Field Education in the School of Social Work currently involves over 300 students working in some 200 agencies and social work practice settings at four different levels of professional preparation: undergraduate junior and senior, and graduate foundation and clinical.

Social Work, as an applied discipline and profession, requires emphasis upon planned field education as a vital component of the educational process. Students at the School of Social Work complete between 600 and 1000 hours in their field settings.  Ongoing supervision during the practicum, and concurrent integrative field seminars, foster student learning, professional development, and the integration of theory and practice.  The 2008 Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) named field the signature pedagogy of social work education, acknowledging the central role of field in each student’s learning.  The collaboration between students, field instructors and field faculty liaisons is a crucial link in the pathway between theory and practice.

As part of our commitment to field education, these web resources have been created to support field students and field instructors.  Basic information, announcements, events, forms, and other tools are provided, as well as resources to plan, guide, enrich, and evaluate field practica.  However, social work - and field education itself - is primarily about personal contact.  So please feel free to call or email us directly to discuss any questions, concerns, or suggestions you have about our field programs.
