Tim Scully

Professor Tim Scully joined the UST Communication Department in 1990. Now in Communication and Journalism, he teaches such courses as Electronic Media Production, Videography, and Public Communication: Speaking & Writing. For two January terms he co-taught Hawaii: Multi-Cultural Communication in Diverse Organizations.

Tim has produced and directed hundreds of broadcast and cablecast video programs in the studio and in the field. His broad experience includes commercials, corporate communications, public relations, public affairs and documentaries.

For over 20 years, Tim has integrated service-learning projects into his production courses, teaching students to work with clients as they give back to the community and develop production skills. Trips to Kenya with Children's HeartLink and to Perth, Western Australia’s Somali community have resulted in documentaries that taught students about their discipline as they learned about different cultures. While in Hawaii Tim and colleague Prof. Debra Petersen took a group of UST students to the Ke Kula Ni'lhau O Kekaha Learning Center to learn about Hawaiian culture, art and education through the eyes of the Hawaiian children.

Tim has been a true champion of service-learning for many years, recognizing that its value reaches not only our student community here at the University of St. Thomas, but also our community partners here and around the world.

As a faculty member, Tim not only talks-the-talk about advancing the common good among his students, he walks-the-walk inspiring his students to get involved in community learning experiences.

“Professor Tim Scully is the professor everyone wants to work with on projects . He is engaged, creative, and always ready to help. When I met with him to work on a university project, he immediatley came up with multiple ideas and guided me through the development  process which was both artistic and informative--he is masterful at his craft.  I look forward to our many future projects. Thank you, Tim, for all of your valuable contributions!” --Eleni Roulis, Ph.D., Associate Vice-President for Academic Services and Special Programs.

Professor Scully received the University of St. Thomas Faculty Service-Learning Award in 2003. Other awards include the Global Citizenship Award, a Spirit of St. Thomas Award and the Multicultural Student Services Outstanding Contribution Award. He is an adviser for TommieMedia, UST’s online student news site, recipient of the 2010 Associated Collegiate Press Online Pacemaker Award.

"I first learned of Professor Scully's work when I was just starting out at the University of St. Thomas. His Children's HeartLink project was nominated for an Emmy Award just as many faculty on campus were being introduced to service-learning for the first time. Those were exciting days—as we began to imagine methods by which to develop compassionate instincts in our students, as well as an awareness of empowerment to produce change peacefully. Prof. Scully has been at the forefront of our efforts using this potentially transformative pedagogy. We are very fortunate to have him on our faculty at the University of St. Thomas."—Dr. Kimberly Vrudny, Interim Director for the Office of Service-Learning.

Currently, Tim is working with his students and the Office of Service-Learning to produce a Service-Learning PSA. He is also an active member of the Service-Learning Advisory Board (SLAB) as he continues to help shape and grow service-learning at UST.
