Motor Coach Trip and Tour- Domestic Architecture at Gainey: Frank Gehry and Edwin Lundie

Gathering/Departure Location: University of St. Thomas St. Paul Campus, Loras Hall, Parking Lot "M"
Event Description: This excursion will present the different architectural philosophies of revivalism and post modernism through the houses at the Gainey Conference Center in Owatonna. Built only thirty years apart, Lundie's Dan C. Gainey house and Gehry's Winton Guest House showcase the variety and skill of two master American architects.
|9:30 a.m.||Motor Coach promptly leaves UST's St. Paul Campus for Owatonna. Please plan to arrive on campus at least 15 minutes prior to the departure time to assure you have parked and are seated by 9:30 a.m. Bus ride will include some preliminary comments by the instructor.|
|10:45 a.m.||Arrive at UST Owatonna Campus; tours and lecture, plus lunch|
|2:45 p.m.||Motor Coach promptly leaves UST's Gainey Center for return trip to St. Paul|
|4:00 p.m.||Arrive back at UST's St. Paul Campus|
Event Instructor: Victoria M. Young is associate professor of modern architectural history specializing in the study of twentieth-century sacred space in America. Young has spent the last decade researching the collaboration between Marcel Breuer and the Benedictines at Saint John’s Abbey and her book is forthcoming from the U of MN Press in fall 2013. Young is a director of the Society of Architectural Historians and a member of Minnesota’s Governor’s Residence Council and State Historic Review Board. Her most recent work is on Frank Gehry, including the 2011 exhibit “Frank Gehry and the Winton Guest House” installed permanently in the guesthouse on the Owatonna campus of the University of St. Thomas.
Registration fee: $50.00 per person (includes transportation and meal costs) There is a limit of 50 registrants for this event. No walk-ups can be accepted for this event.
