Relationship intimacy is critical for each of us as we attempt to maintain a high quality of life as we age. Intimacy is best understood as a communicative process involving the constant negotiation of the level, type, and physical manifestation of that intimacy. As the nature of intimacy changes across the life span, it is important to recognize and understand the various factors, such as gender, cultural norms, interpersonal skills, and physical limitations that both enhance and limit our ability to maintain a high level of intimacy as we age.
Jon Nussbaum (Ph.D., Purdue, 1981) is a Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences and Human Development & Family Studies at Penn State University. He is the Past President of the International Communication Association and the International Society of Language and Social Psychology, former editor of the Journal of Communication, a Fulbright Research Fellow in the UK, a Fellow of the International Communication Association and a Fellow within the Adult Development and Agin Division of the American Psychological Association. Nussbaum has published 13 books and over 80 journal articles and book chapters, studying communication behaviors and patterns across the life span including research on family, friendship and professional relationships with well and frail older adults.
