Telephone and Mail

Phone Calls

The use of Skype and prepaid phone cards available at local tabacchi shops are the way to go for minimizing telephone costs and for making intenational calls. Phone cards are for international calls and often cannot be used for local calls. Generally, American 800 numbers cannot be accessed from international locations. Calling cards purchased in the United States often will have special directions for use overseas, however, 800 (not 888 or 877) numbers sometimes may be accessed by dialing 880 instrad of 800, at which point you will be charged for the international portion of the call instead of it being toll free. Keep in mind that charges are higher when placing a call to a cell phone from a landline phone and calls made from cell phone to cell phone are generally less expensive.

Long Distance Calling

When calling direct from Italy, dial 001 + area code + number. Family and friends calling Rome from the United States need to dial 011 39 (country code) 06 (Rome code) and the number, i.e. 011 09 06 3260 0548 (Bernardi phone number).

Important Numbers

06 is the prefix for all Rome telephone numbers except cell phone and emergency numbers.
39 is the country code for incoming international calls.
