WHAT WE RECYCLE: Confidential Paper

WE RECYCLE:

  • All paper material that the generator considers confidential
  • In order to insure increased confidentiality, please remove all hanging files, photos, plastic, magazines, newspaper, and other contaminants from the confidential paper before recycling. This will decrease or eliminate additional handling of the confidential paper.

WHERE TO RECYCLE:

  • Departments generating high volumes of confidential paper on an ongoing basis have a confidential recycling bin in their area.
  • Confidential paper is picked up from these departments on a regular schedule.
  • If your department is not on the confidential paper schedule and you have confidential paper you would like picked up, please send in a request for service to be included in the weekly pick-ups. Confidential containers can be provided. This service is not available for the Minneapolis campus except for specific pick-ups requested through UST Request for Service.

WHAT HAPPENS TO CONFIDENTIAL PAPER:

  • Confidential paper is taken to the recycling center in the Physical Plant where it is kept in separate containers from regular paper recycling.
  • Twice a week, confidential paper is picked up by Rock-Tenn where it is eventually mixed with other paper and turned into pulp.

FACTS ABOUT CONFIDENTIAL PAPER:

  • It is illegal to burn paper in the city of St. Paul. In the past, it was possible to incinerate campus paper, but air quality concerns have stopped this operating procedure.
  • St. Thomas recycles about a ton of confidential paper every month.
  • To insure confidentiality for your paper, it is recommended confidential paper be shredded before it is recycled. The Recycling Center does not offer paper shredding services. Office shredders for your department are readily available in a variety of sizes through Corporate Express and other vendors.
