UST Psychology Department Mission

Congruent with the Catholic, urban, liberal arts mission of the University of St. Thomas, the Psychology Department grounds its practices in the conviction that a comprehensive liberal arts education in psychology fosters students' intellectual curiosity, prepares them for a career, and facilitates understanding of how psychology can be applied to enhance human welfare and social justice.  The UST Psychology Department provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the field of psychology, its history, scientific basis, major knowledge frameworks and significant findings.  It also cultivates students' critical thinking skills and provides hands-on experience in the multiple phases of psychological problem-solving and research, both basic and applied.  Both in and out of the classroom we seek to provide students with opportunities for research collaboration with faculty as well as meaningful active learning opportunities (e.g., community-based learning, inquiry-based pedagogy, study abroad opportunities).  In doing so, we prepare students for advanced study in psychology, successful career choices, and responsible citizenship.
