Application Process

Application Procedure

We utilize the uniform psychology internship application (AAPI Online) developed by The Association of Postdoctoral and Psychology Internship Centers (APPIC). To locate the AAPI Online and to complete our application process, visit the APPIC website at www.appic.org and click on the AAPI online icon.

Listen to staff members describe who is a good fit for the internship.

The entire application is to be completed online. General Instructions are available on the front page of the AAPI Online, as well as instructions for each separate section of the Application.

The AAPI Online includes a cover letter, the summary of personal and educational information, the summary of your doctoral experience, 4 essays, a CV, letters of recommendation, and graduate transcripts. We require

  1. A current vita reflecting applied professional experience and related coursework
  2. Letters of recommendation from
    • major academic advisor
    • two licensed psychologists who have supervised your clinical work

We require an additional essay supplemental to the AAPI Online which should be submitted in the APPI Online Supplemental section. Candidates should address the question "How would who you are contribute to a college or university counseling center?"

Policy on Intern Selection: Intern applicants must be currently enrolled in counseling or clinical psychology doctoral programs. Applicants for internship must have completed a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised experience (250 of which must be direct therapy hours) in counseling or clinical work, qualifying examinations and all of the coursework toward their doctoral degree. Dissertation proposals must be approved before the start of the internship. Successful applicants will have demonstrated interest in college or university counseling and/or higher education.

An intern selection committee, comprised of senior staff and an intern, evaluate internship applications. Applications are reviewed based on candidate's interest and experience in each of the competency areas, as well as experience working with college or university-aged populations. Applicants who receive the highest ratings are invited to participate in interviews. We offer on-site, telephone, or interactive video interviews depending on the applicant’s preference or availability.

Per University of St. Thomas Human Resources policies and after completion of the APPIC match, a criminal background check will be performed for all interns matched to our site. The match result will be contingent on passing this procedure.
