Fire
1. Upon discovering a fire, explosion
or smoke in a building, activate the fire alarm system if there is one.
2. After sounding the alarm, call
Public Safety and Parking services at (962) 5555 and give:
Building Name, Floor,
Room Number, Type of Incident
3. After sounding alarm, attempt to
contain a small fire by utilizing available fire extinguishers ONLY IF TRAINED TO DO SO.
If the fire is beyond control or involves potentially explosive or hazardous materials,
leave the building.
4. WHEN A FIRE ALARM SOUNDS, COMPLETE
EVACUATION IS REQUIRED. Walk, DO NOT RUN to the nearest stairway exit and proceed to
ground level. If time permits, close doors and windows on your level. Even if the alarm
stops, continue the evacuation and warn others who may attempt to enter the building. No
One Is To Enter The Building Unless Authorized By Public Safety and Parking Services or
Fire Personnel.
5. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS DURING A FIRE
EMERGENCY.
6. Evacuate the building and proceed
to a safe distance from the building. Leave walks and driveways open for arriving
firefighters. Do not return to the building until directed to do so by Public Safety and
Parking Services Officers of Fire personnel.
7. Notify firefighters on the scene if
you suspect someone may be trapped inside the building.
A $50.00 fine can be assessed to each
person not leaving the building.
DOs during a fire alarm.
- Leave immediate fire area and close doors
behind you.
- Use the stairwells to evacuate the building.
If caught in heavy smoke, take short breaths
through your nose, stay near the floor, and move to the exit by crawling.
DONTS during a fire alarm.
- DO NOT attempt to fight the fire unless
trained to do so.
What Will Happen Next:
- The fire department is notified by the Public
Safety Department
- Public Safety Officers prepare for the
arrival of fire personnel.
- Firefighters arrive to handle the emergency.
- Public Safety Officers will take a head and
name count of evacuees.
- Public Safety Officers will advise evacuees
where to go and what to do.
