About Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety employs full-and part-time public safety officers who patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and in vehicles.  These officers are trained in law enforcement, conflict resolution, crisis management, crowd control and crime prevention, as well as first aid.  While officers are patrolling campus, the public safety office is staffed by dispatchers.  These dispatchers monitor alarm panels and emergency phone lines as well as serve as a source of information to university, staff, students and visitors.  Their major responsibility is to direct officers in responding quickly to emergencies and to summon fire, police and emergency medical personnel if needed.

Public Safety officers are responsible for the enforcement of all state and local laws as they apply to the University of St. Thomas.   As a result, the public safety staff works closely with both the St. Paul and Minneapolis police departments.  Campus public safety officers are authorized to make citizen arrests and will detain people for police agencies.

Public Safety is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  It functions as an independent agent of the university to provide a sensitive, measured response to all situations requiring public safety services. Click here for information on Parking Services.
