Application Timeline for Graduate Study (Entry Fall 2010)
NOTE: Start the process at least one year in advance! Most applications are due between December and March, so give yourself plenty of time to make your application as strong as possible. The more time you give yourself, the better off you’ll be.
Spring 2009

Meet with a faculty member in the Political Science Department to discuss the possibilities concerning areas of study, program options, and graduate schools.

Check to ensure you have taken or will take the recommended courses for entry into graduate school.
Summer 2009

Decide what you want to do.

Research schools and programs that fit your interests.

Prepare for and take admission exams: GRE, LSAT, etc.

Find and apply for financial aid in the form of fellowships and assistantships in your field of interest.
Fall 2009

Choose your preferences of schools and programs.

Contact the departments and schools for more information (NOTE: Getting in contact with a faculty member working in your field of interest from the graduate school departments can help provide valuable information).

Take admissions examinations (GRE, LSAT, etc.) and request the scores be sent to the appropriate schools and departments.

Talk with the people you will be asking to write recommendations.Begin the application process (NOTE: deadlines vary by school).

Write your statement of purpose, diversity statement, etc.

Refine writing samples to be submitted with your applications.

Meet with a faculty member to go over application materials, essays, and writing sample.
Winter 2009/2010

Request transcripts.

Place finishing touches on writing samples and required essays.

Finish and submit applications (NOTE: Double-check the requirements of each school and department before submission).

Fill out your FAFSA forms.
Spring 2010

Wait for responses.

If admission is offered, compare offers to choose the best option for you, review financial aid offers to see if further funding will be necessary, submit decisions to schools offering admissions and get ready to go.

If admission was not offered, contact the departments to see how your application can be improved and take necessary steps toward next years application.
