H1N1 Weekly Report: Nov. 13, 2009

University of St. Thomas H1N1 (or Influenza-Like-Illness) Report for Nov. 13, 2009

By Madonna McDermott, director, Student Health Service & Wellness Center

During the ninth and tenth weeks of the semester, October 28- November 12th, 2009, H1N1 influenza activity at the University of St. Thomas decreased significantly for the first time since the beginning of the school year.  56 new cases were reported week 9 and 42 new cases week 10, compared to 115 during the week of October 21st.  A total of 491 cases have been reported.  It does appear that the H1N1 influenza activity on the University of St. Thomas campus is declining. However, a non-resident, graduate student became ill on October 31, 2009 and passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009 from complications related to bacterial pneumonia and possible H1N1.  This student had not been on campus or in class for several weeks. Our sympathies go out to the family.

To assist with screening UST students, the Student Health Service has opened a triage or screening mobile unit located between Morrison and Brady Residence Halls on the North campus. The screening service hours of operation are available Monday – Friday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  A Registered nurse will be available to assess students and answer questions regarding H1N1. There is no cost for this service. If symptoms or student’s condition warrants, they will be referred to Student Health Service for an appointment with a health care provider.

Student Health Service is still awaiting their first shipment of H1N1 vaccine. Those students with underlying medical conditions are urged to obtain this vaccination through their primary care provider if possible.
