The University of St. Thomas

Pandemic Planning For Individuals

Why Should I Plan for a Pandemic?

In effort to reduce the impact of a pandemic on the University of St. Thomas, it is important for all members of the University community (students, families, staff, and faculty) to begin planning for a pandemic now. While the University of St. Thomas is planning thoroughly for a pandemic, proper planning on your part will allow you to better protect yourself and prepare for any potential changes during the course of the outbreak.

What Should My Plan Be?

In addition to practicing the health habits found in the Prevention Tips section, you are encouraged to develop your own personal evacuation plan. This plan will allow you to respond quickly to an increased threat. Use the following steps as a guide in developing your plan:

Step #1: Begin by answering the following questions:

  • Is my home, or other possible primary location, within driving distance of UST? (While air travel may be a possibility, events of the pandemic elsewhere in the country may cause staffing and fuel shortages. It is essential that you select a location that is withing reasonable driving distance from UST)
  • If it is not within driving distance, is there a friend or a relative that I could stay with temporarily until I get home or to my primary location?
  • Do my intended locations allow me safe distance from those who are infected?
  • How will I get to get to my location(s), and how can I make those arrangements?
  • As my life circumstances or the events of the pandemic change, how will these changes impact my plan?
  • What will I need to bring with me, and how might this affect my transportation needs?
  • How will I communicate with my family in the event of an evacuation?
  • How are my intended locations preparing for a pandemic

Step #2: Write down your plan

Step #3: Share your plan with your family and anyone else on whom you are relying to make your plan effective. Keep all parties informed and updated.

Step #4: Periodically review your plan for accuracy and effectiveness
