The University of St. Thomas is committed to a healthy campus community. This website has been designed to provide updates and information about the 2009 H1N1 flu virus as it occurs on campus. We will remain attentive regarding changes and will communicate any changes through this website. If there are radical events, which may have a major effect for the St. Thomas community, announcements may also be transmitted via the Bulletin and individual e-mails. During the 11th week of the semester, Nov. 12 to Nov.18, H1N1 influenza activity at the University of St. Thomas continued to decline with only 13 new cases of influenza-like-illnesses reported. The total number of reported cases since September is now 504.
The Minnesota Department of Health reports influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved in the Sentinel Provider Network continued to increase this past week. Statewide, since Sept. 1, there have been 1,439 confirmed novel H1N1 influenza hospitalizations, 26 H1N1-associated deaths, and two influenza-type unspecified deaths.
An estimated 22 million people have become ill from pandemic influenza. Approximately 98,000 people have been hospitalized as a result of H1N1 related illness and it is estimated that 3,900 people have died so far in the first six months of the pandemic from this virus. The H1N1 pandemic has behaved very differently than the seasonal flu in that it has disproportionately affected children and young adults.
The St. Thomas Student Health Service is anticipating receiving its first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine shortly. The campus community will be notified via Bulletin Today and the university's Pandemic Web site when distribution is to begin.
At this time vaccine only will be given to individuals in the following groups:
When available, the H1N1 vaccination will be administered by a registered nurse in the Tommie Triage Trailer located between Morrison and Brady residence halls on the north campus.
