Bush Foundation grant will help to create new scholarships

February 19, 2009

Financial aid for students is a cornerstone of the Opening Doors capital campaign, and a recent grant from the Bush Foundation will help donors to support students in perpetuity.

Last fall, the Bush Foundation awarded St. Thomas a $1 million grant that will be used as matching funds for gifts that create endowed scholarships at the university. All scholarships created through these matching funds will benefit undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need.

“We never want a St. Thomas education to be out of reach for students due to financial hardship,” said Steve Hoeppner, executive director of development at St. Thomas. “Meeting the needs of our students, 90 percent of whom qualify for and receive financial aid, would be impossible without generous gifts from our friends and alumni. We are grateful that those gifts will go even further through these matching funds.”

Several new scholarships have been endowed in recent months, thanks to the Bush Foundation grant. To learn more about creating an endowed scholarship by taking advantage of this opportunity, contact the Development Office at (651) 962-6950.
