Meet a Chairholder

Thomas D. Sullivan, Ph.D.

Thomas SullivanDr. Thomas Sullivan is a national-award-winning teacher and has published widely in logic, metaphysics, ethics, and the philosophy of religion. A long-term member of the St. Thomas Philosophy Department, since 1990 he has held the Aquinas Chair in Philosophy and Theology.

"I have always seen an endowed chair as a wonderful gift to the entire university that creates exceptional opportunities for faculty and students to vigorously pursue together questions that matter, both new and enduring."

Dr. Sullivan's vision of a chair as involving the larger university community has led to his continual publication with others, across a variety of fields, complementing his individual research projects. Drawing on the Aquinas Chair's resources, he has created and sponsored many programs, including interdisciplinary team-teaching, interdisciplinary colloquia, summer seminars (local and national), several interdisciplinary lecture series for the downtown-St. Paul community, and a distinguished-speakers program featuring internationally known philosophers.

Also, Dr. Sullivan helped to create St. Thomas' internationally recognized Catholic Studies program.
