Nonimmigrants (including persons on F-1, J-1, H-1, J-2 and F-2 status) who have earned income in the U.S. or received a scholarship from a U.S. source (including UST) are required by law to file Federal and State income tax forms with the Internal Revenue Service by April 15 for the previous year. Also, all F-1 and J-1 students and dependents must file the simple 8843 form, whether they worked or not. This can protect you from being improperly taxed in the future.
The Federal forms you must file are different from those US citizens must file and generally are not available in libraries or post offices. Office of International Student Services will provide Federal and State of Minnesota forms beginning in early February. When you file your tax return you must submit any W-2 forms (from employers) and any 1099 forms (from your bank). If you filed 2001 Federal and State tax returns, bring copies of those forms also. Students who receive a UST scholarship should wait to file their tax returns until they receive a 1042-S form from the UST payroll office.
You can also get forms and information on Federal and State taxes from these 2 government websites:
US: http://www.irs.gov
State of Minnesota: http://www.taxes.state.mn.us/
Nonimmigrants who do not have a US Social Security Number must apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification) number from IRS and use this number on your tax forms. You can obtain an ITIN number by downloading http://www.is.ustreas.gov or by calling the IRS at 1-800-829-3676.
