Frequently Asked Questions
What is the International Mentor program?
The International Mentor program is designed to foster the transition of new international students to the University of St. Thomas (UST). Each international student is paired with a international mentor who will:
reach out to the international students prior to his/her arrival to campus
assist student international students throughout orientation
plan fun events and adventures throughout the semester that explore the UST campus and the Twin Cities at large .
International mentors are upper classmen and they hail from all over the U.S. and some are also seasoned international students.
I am a new international student, when will I meet my mentor?
If you are a new international student starting classes at UST in the fall semester, your mentor will contact you as in summer (June) prior to your arrival on campus. You and your mentor will communicate throughout the summer before you arrive on campus.
If you are a new student starting your classes at UST in the spring semester, your mentor will contact you in the month prior to you arrival on campus. They can answer nuermous questions for you, such as:
What should I pack before I arrive?
What's campus life like at UST?
Where are the must see places in the Twin Cities?
Your mentor/s will also assist you with any questions that you may have regarding how to register for classes, finding an apartment, and managing your classes.
Your mentor will send out weekly emails to keep you current on events that International Student Services host which are in addition to their planned events. We strongly encourage you to participate and to try to attend at least 3 main events during the semester. Attending mentor events is a great way to meet more people, and create a community for yourself while you are studying here in the U.S.
Here are a few examples of the Undergraduate Mentor Program events that we have sponsored in the past.
- First trip to the Mall of America
- Ice Skating at the Depot
- Dinner at many great local restaurants
- Attending live music concerts
- Festival of Nations
- Latin Dance Night
- The Gutherie Theater
Here is what former international students had to say about participating in the Mentor Program:
“I love the events and how everyone got to know each other… the ‘international table’ at the cafeteria where we all sat together… and of course my mentor who always helped me with any questions I had.
- Maria Robelo (Honduras)
“The small group weekly meetings were a blast! I enjoyed all of them. The outings and the events with the entire group were amazing as well. They brought everyone together, such good times!”
- Ohoud Saad (Egypt)
"ISS mentor program provided me a great start at St. Thomas. Even though I came in the middle of the school year, mentors' effort to introduce the campus area and other international students helped me to adapt to the U.S. college life faster than I could have ever imagine."
