January Term Options for F-1 and J1 Students

January Term (J-term) is an optional term for continuing F-1 and J-1 students.

Winter Break and J-term at the University of St. Thomas begin on December 22, 2007 or when all of your final papers, exams and projects are completed for the Fall Semester.  J-term ends for all students on SundayJanuary 27, 2008.

Continuing F-1 and J-1 visa students have the following options during the J-term:
  • Enroll in courses at the University of St. Thomas
  • Enroll in courses at a different university or college as a visiting student
  • Do not enroll in courses at St. Thomas or another university or college
  • Work part-time or full-time on the University of St. Thomas campus
  • Work part-time or full-time off campus with Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization if you have been in F-1 status for at least 2 academic semesters - obtain permission from OISS
  • Work part-time or full-time off campus with Academic Training (AT) authorization if you have J-1 status - obtain permission from OISS
  • Travel home, to a different country, or a different U.S. state (have your I-20 signed for travel by an OISS Advisor on page 3 before leaving the U.S.)
  • Any combination of the above options
