Call for Papers: Latin American Studies Conference at Baylor University

Race, Religion and Democracy:
Latin America in a Globalized World
February 9th-10th, 2007

Latin American Studies at Baylor University will be holding its Thirteenth Joseph Vélez conference from February 9th to10th, in Waco, Texas. The focus will be on the relationship between race, religion, and democracy in Latin America and how questions of cultural renewal and identity will affect this region’s place in today’s globalized world.

Conference highlights include the address by keynote speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Klaiber, S.J., professor of history at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and author of several books on the Church and dictatorships in Latin America, and a recital of Latin American music by renowned Brazilian composer and pianist, Dr. Celso Loureiro Chaves and distinguished American cellist, Prof. Dennis Parker.

Papers may examine the conference topic from a variety of perspectives, including literary, social, cultural, political, ideological, anthropological, and artistic. Possible panel topics and papers might include, but are not limited to discussions of the following issues:

Exile, Racial Democracy, Dictatorships, Democratization and Neo-Liberalism, Contemporary Cinema, Music, Afro-Latin American Literature, Human Rights, Social Movements, Religion, Migration and Diaspora Issues, Cultural Studies

Proposals (200-word abstract) for single papers and complete sessions are welcome and may be written in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Please include your name, academic affiliation, contact information, and request for audiovisual support if needed.

Submission deadline: December 15, 2006. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Please email your submission to LAS2007@baylor.edu. Registration fee: US $40.
