Social Security Office trips

Attention all students who are in need of a social security card, we are going to be organizing trips to take students to the Social Security office downtown St. Paul.  The two remaining dates and times are:

Trip #3
Tuesday, October 30
8:00AM
Meet in OISS (MHC 161, St. Paul Campus)

Please sign-up at OISS or email us back at oiss@stthomas.edu so we can have a good idea of how many students are coming and whether we should drive or take the bus there. Students are required to get a Social Security Number within 90 days of starting employment.

Our return will depend on the processing time for each student.  It has been taking about 15-20 minutes per person.  If you need to come back earlier, you are welcomed to take the city bus back to campus after your appointment so you do not have to wait for others to finish.

What you need to bring with you:
  • Passport
  • I-94 card
  • I-20
  • check-stub from first paycheck (please note, we do not need to have the actual check - you can cash this.  We just need the check-stub half for this appointment)  If you do not have a paycheck yet, have your employer write a letter on official letterhead stating you have a job on campus.
  • letter from OISS verifying your status (http://www.stthomas.edu/oiss/forms/verification/default.html indicate "Social Security Application" in the Reason for Verification field)
  • the completed Social Security application  - there is no fee for this application.
After we help students process social security letters, our next trip will be to get Minnesota Identification cards.  Await more information in newsletter about this trip.  Call OISS if you have questions.
