Welcome to National Poetry
Slam Champion Isis!
STAR welcomes the 2006 National Poetry Slam Champion, Isis,
who will present her lyrics for spoken word and music at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 18, in O'Shaughnessy Educational Center
auditorium.
Isis has been performing poetry
professionally for 5 years, and has become synonymous with
excellence. Isis poetry explores
universal
themes of empowerment, reclamation, love, abuse and the mistakes
we all make. She has a tenderness at the center of her work,
which comes thru in her performance. Isis' work has been
described as, "a meritage of Saul Williams' passion and Maya
Angelou's eloquence with an incendiary tongue." The grace and
power she exudes from any stage are unparalleled. Each word
interlocks to weave a tapestry of teaching, living, healing, and
loving.

Before you write, as you write, after you write
What We Do
Peer writing consultants provide one-on-one conferences that are
free, for any course, for writing at any stage. You don't need a
draft, but please bring the assignment. And make an appointment
at least a day before the due date.
The peer writing consultants work with you to:
become a better writer
communicate your ideas clearly
think critically
experience an audience as you write
make deeper connections between class discussions, your reading,
and your own observations and experiences
see writing and the CFW as crucial throughout your time at UST!
How We Work
Your conversations with us are confidential and can last up to
an hour. During a conference, we can help you understand an
assignment, interpret assigned readings, brainstorm, develop
your ideas, focus on your main point, and organize your paper.
We won't proofread your papers or help you "fix" your mistakes,
and you can't drop off your draft to pick up later. Instead
we'll ask you a lot of questions, beginning with your
understanding of the assignment. And we may ask you to read your
paper aloud. In these ways, we can see what makes sense to you
and what may need more work. If you have concerns about your
grammar and punctuation, we can give you strategies for editing
your writing.
The peer consultant will help you become actively involved in
the topic and your writing. Together you'll find out what needs
improving and ways to improve it.
If you can gain extra credit for coming to the Center, please
come prepared to work and not just to gain the credit!
