Summer Options for F-1 and J-1 Students

Summer is an optional term except for new international students.  New F-1 and J-1 visa students who begin their studies at the University of St. Thomas in the summer must enroll in at least six credit hours (undergraduate students) or three credit hours (graduate students) to maintain their full-time student status.

Summer term at the University of St. Thomas begins on May 19 or when all of your final papers, exams and projects are completed for the Spring Semester.  Summer term ends for all students on Tuesday, September 4, 2007.

Continuing F-1 and J-1 visa students have the following options during the Summer term:
  • Enroll in courses at the University of St. Thomas
  • Enroll in courses at a different university or college as a visiting student
  • Do not enroll in courses at St. Thomas or another university or college
  • Work part-time or full-time on the University of St. Thomas campus
  • Work part-time or full-time off campus with Curricular Practical Training (CPT) if you have been in F-1 status for at least 2 academic semesters
  • Travel home, to a different country, or a different U.S. state (have your I-20 signed for travel on page 3 before leaving the U.S.)
  • Any combination of the above options
Contact OISS if you have questions about your situation.  651-962-6650 or oiss@stthomas.edu
