Special Registration Information

Special Registration

If you are selected or informed at the port of entry or at a later date, you will be instructed by DHS (Department of Homeland Security) to follow some or all of these procedures:

  • Registration with DHS, which includes taking the individual’s fingerprints and photograph.

  • Be interviewed by DHS within 30 to 40 days of entering the United States.

  • Be interviewed again by DHS one year after entering the United States.

  • Continue to be interviewed by DHS on the annual anniversary date of their last admission to the United States.

For all non-immigrant visa holders from: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, or Yemen.

  • Offices for Special Registration. Depart the United States from an officially-designated port of departure only and report to a DHS officer at such port prior to departure. Please see below for the two Minnesota offices for Special Registration.

  • Updating Address. Form AR-11SR is no longer required of F-1 and J-1 visa holders provided their address change is reported in the SEVIS system. Changes of universities will be also reported in the SEVIS system through normal transfer procedures. F-1 and J-1 students should update their address in Murphy Online and OISS will receive these changes to update in SEVIS. However, all other foreign nationals, including US permanent residents, individuals with a visa status other than F-1 and J-1 and affected by Special Registration, must file Form AR-11 SR  within 10 days of moving.
