It's National
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is National Sexual Assault
Awareness Month. The UST Sexual Violence Prevention Programming
Committee is sponsoring several events in recognition of the month
because, yes, sexual assault happens at St. Thomas.
The events include these
opportunities:
- One in
Four, a nationally recognized program for college men, will
bring four recent college graduates to campus as part of its
national RV tour. Program representatives will speak to men
about what they can do to end sexual violence from 6 to 7 p.m.
and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in O’Shaughnessy
Educational Center Auditorium.
- Roberta Gibbons is the associate director of the Aurora
Center at the University of Minnesota and project director for
the U.S. Department of Justice's "Grants to Reduce Violence
Against Women on Campus." She will present two programs to UST
women on Thursday, April 26. One, "The Power to Make a
Difference: What Women (and Men) Can Do To Reduce Violence in
Their Everyday Lives," is for women leaders from 5 to 6 p.m. in
O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium. She will give a
talk for all women, "Green M&Ms and Other Legends: Understanding
Rape in a Culture of Confusion," at 7:30 p.m. in OEC auditorium.
- A rally against rape and other forms of violence will be
held at the arches on Monday evening, April 30. Take Back the
Night will be open to everyone and begins at 8 p.m.
- Learn self-defense, “yell and hit stuff,” at the Women’s
Self- Defense Class on from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, April
21, in the third-floor sport court, O'Shaughnessy Hall athletic
building.
- Information tables will be available during the convo hour
(11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) on Tuesday, April 17, and Wednesday, April
25, in the lower quadrangle. Pick up a teal lapel ribbon to show
your support and sign your name in a chalk circle to speak out
against sexual assault.
Posters and table tents with information about sexual
assault will be located around campus throughout the month.
