Information Sessions offered on How to Gain
Off-campus Work Permission

OPT? CPT? Academic Training? Confused about all of the acronyms? Join us for an information session that explains the basic process. Learn more your options for internships and employment. OISS will be offering the following workshops about OPT, CPT, and Academic Training.

Academic Training-(Off Campus Work Permission)
 for J-1 students

Academic Training is authorized by OISS for J-1 students on a University of St. Thomas DS-2019. It is authorization for paid or unpaid employment off-campus.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
for F-1 students

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is authorization for paid or unpaid employment that is an integral part of the established curriculum. CPT is available during (not after) a course of study and must be authorized for a specific employers. There is no limit to part-time (less than 20 hours per week) CPT.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
for F-1 students

F-1 students may apply for optional practical training (OPT) during their final semester. OPT may be used for a maximum of 12 months of full-time employment after each degree level. For example: a student could do 12 months of OPT after their Bachelor Degree, 12 months of OPT after their Masters Degree and 12 months of OPT after their Doctorate degree.
