Social Security Number

Getting a Social Security number

F-1 & J-1 Students:

Step 1 - Find a job on-campus and apply for it, go to the interview, and accept the position;

Step 2 - Print a work form from Murphy online (at this time you need to be eligible to work on-campus and be enrolled full-time);

Step 3 - Start working and after approximately two weeks receive a pay check from St. Thomas. Once you have the pay check, cash the check and keep the stub (the bottom portion detailing how much you earned, not the top part which is the check);

Step 4 - Request a letter from OISS by completing the online form. Before filling out the form online please make sure you have the following information:

  • Name
  • Student ID #
  • Where you work
  • When you began to work
  • How many hours you work per week
  • Name of supervisor (with phone number)

NEW. You will need to have your employer sign the letter and then a Designated School Official(DSO) in OISS will sign the letter.

Step 5 - Bring the letter from OISS, your pay check stub, your current and stamped I-20 or DS-2019, I-94, passport, and completed Application for a Social Security Number to the Social Security office to apply for a SSN card:

Address of the Social Security Office:

Step 6 - Once you receive the card, bring it in to our office (OISS) so we can make a copy and show it to the Payroll Office, AQU 221 as well.

Please note: In the case of EAD-based F-1 or M-1 employment, the employment start date on the EAD must already have been reached before SSA will process a SSN.
