About Us - Tom Carey

Hi-my name is Dr. Thomas Carey and I work in the Office of International Student Services as an International Student Advisor/Immigration Specialist. I am starting my second year in this position as I began here at the University of St. Thomas in the Fall Semester of 2001. I am employed here half time which means I am on campus only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and a half day on Thursdays. I enjoy very much working with the international students here at St. Thomas. I am trying to keep up with the new SEVIS requirements and informing students that they need to be enrolled full time and not to work without proper work authorization.

I am not new to working with international students as I served as an international student advisor at North Hennepin Community College for over 30 years prior to coming to St. Thomas. I also have been very active with NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the professional organization dealing with international students, serving as a Regional Chair and a National Vice-President. I am currently a trainer for NAFSA in their Professional Development Workshops and was recently awarded "Life Membership" in NAFSA.

I have traveled extensively to every state in the United States except Alaska and many countries of the world including China, Japan, England, France, Holland, Costa Rica, Brazil, New Zeeland and Scotland. I lived in Australia for seven months on a teacher exchange, I was on a Fulbright trip to Germany, I was on a youth soccer program in Italy, and I have visited Ireland on numerous occasions.

I drive an motorcycle to work every day until the snow flies and generally take a long motorcycle trip to Yellowstone Park each summer. I enjoy camping, hiking, bike riding, fishing, golf, softball, and tennis. I love the out of doors and spend as much time outside that I can. I currently live on six acres in the Brooklyn Park area. I have an interest in politics and have served as a state political delegate. I enjoy studying the Eastern religions and they interface with the Western religions along with Native American spirituality.

I have four children- Chris is the Associate Dean of International Studies at Hampshire College, in Amherst, Massachusetts; Patrick just completed medical school at the University of Minnesota and is currently doing his medical residency in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Colleen is in the International Admissions Office here at St. Thomas and the head women's soccer coach; Bridget received her M.A. from Queen's University in Belfast and is currently employed in Dublin, Ireland serving as an on-site coordinator for US students studying in Ireland.
