About 300 members of the University of St. Thomas community wrapped up the annual Heritage Week celebration with a March 7 special event congratulating faculty and staff.

University employees were honored for service anniversaries, and six faculty and staff were presented some new awards for outstanding achievements.

If you missed the presentation, you can see videos profiling the inaugural – and inspiring – winners of the John Ireland Award for Outstanding Achievement as Teacher-Scholar for faculty and the Distinguished Citizen Award and the Lifelong Learner Award for staff.

John Ireland Award for Outstanding Achievement as Teacher-ScholarSee video about four members of the faculty chosen for this award:

  • Dr. Thomas Sullivan holds the Aquinas Chair in Philosophy and Theology. He has been teaching in the Philosophy Department since 1966. He is the author of books and articles on logic, metaphysics, Aquinas and ethics.
  • Dr. Stephen Brookfield has been a member of the School of Education since 1992. He has written 10 books on learning and critical thinking.
  • Dr. Mary Reichardt joined the St. Thomas faculty in 1988 and taught in the English Department 15 years before moving to the Catholic Studies Department.  She has published seven books on American and Catholic literature.
  • Dr. Terence Nichols has been a member of the Theology Department since 1988 and was its chair from 2002 to 2006. The author of two books, he is co-founder of the Muslim-Christian Dialogue Center at St. Thomas, and is co-founder of Casa Guadalupana, a house for homeless women and children.

Distinguished Citizen Award – Michael Barrett received the Distinguished Citizen Award for outstanding service to the university and the community. He is associate director and manager of investigations in the St. Thomas Public Safety Department. See video.

Lifelong Learner Award – Dr. Thomas Carey received the Lifelong Learning Award for his commitment to continuous learning and professional development. And international student adviser and immigration specialist, he joined St. Thomas in 2001 after he "retired" from a nearly 50-year career in education - more than 30 as an adviser to international students at North Hennepin Community College.  See video.
