UST MBA victorious in 4th Annual Hockey Cup Clark Gregor March 14, 2011 MBA hockey team (in purple) in action against the Law School teamIt’s become a fierce rivalry in just four short years: the annual battle between UST’s MBA and JD students on the hockey rink. The MBA students won the first “11th Street Hockey Cup” in 2008, but the law students have been victorious for the past two years.Last Friday night, March 11, the rivalry was renewed at the Augsburg Ice Rink. The teams remained scoreless through the first two hard-fought periods as a number of MBA players, including Kyle Jorgenson, Shea Sajevic, and Ben Ebeling, each made several shots on goal. First-year MBA student Patrick Siering broke the game open early in the third period with a goal that brought the MBA fans to their feet. Energized by the goal, the MBA team kept the pressure on the law team, and second-year MBA student Eddie Olson slapped a shot into the goal with 10:28 remaining in the third period.Leading 2-0, first-year MBA goalie Ethan Keller made more than a dozen saves over the next several minutes as the law team applied pressure. The law team continued to make shots on goal, one of which finally found the net with 1:37 remaining in the third period. The MBA team was successful in holding off the law team as time ran out, and they reclaimed the Hockey Cup trophy for the first time since 2008 with a 2-1 victory.MBA fans Laura Hagen, Kelsey Luers, and Karine Korman root for the team (and film a commercial for Dairy Queen?)Students enrolled in the dual JD/MBA program have a unique dilemma: which team to root for? For Matt Jensen, the decision was a tough one—after initially sitting with the law students, he came over to the MBA side early in the game. JD/MBA student Scott Buell, a veteran of previous Hockey Cup games, also judiciously split his time between the sides. Some Opus College of Business professors are big fans of the annual hockey game as well. Professor Jim Arnold rooted for the MBA side from the stands, and Professor Teresa Rothausen-Vange, who was unable to attend due to illness, sent a congratulatory e-mail to the students the morning following the game. She wrote: “This is the first MBA vs. JD game hockey game I’ve ever missed! Thanks for getting us our trophy (and our pride!) back!”For fans of the MBA team, next year’s prospects look bright, as several of this year’s standout players will be returning.
