  • “Factory production inches up ,” Star Tribune, Jan. 17, 2004. “Fred Zimmerman, a University of St. Thomas professor who keeps a close eye on manufacturing, said he recently ran across a startling statistic. A survey of manufacturers nationwide found only one Minnesota company that has built a factory larger than 500,000 square feet since 1980. Tennessee had 20 of that size built in the past 23 years, while Kentucky had 13. ‘There's a lot of manufacturing expansion in some states, but not here,’ Zimmerman said. ‘I'm am less optimistic about Minnesota than the rest of the United States.
