Here's a roundup of recent St. Thomas mentions of interest in various media. Read the stories by clicking on the links.   • "Vince Flynn on Writing Political Thrillers," video segment on "Imus in the Morning," Fox Business Network, Nov. 18, 2009. Best-selling author Flynn is a 1988 St. Thomas alumnus.
  • "Study: Twin Cities Can't Afford 4 Major Sports Teams," KSTP-TV, Dec. 8, 2009. "Dr. Dave Vang of the University of St. Thomas Finance Department said, 'In the long run, I find it hard to believe that we can maintain all four at the same time.'" 
  • "Too Many Students Going to College? The Conversation Continues," Chronicle of Higher Education Review, Dec. 9, 2009. "Meanwhile, at the University of St. Thomas, in Minnesota, a reporter for the campus's student-run online news service, Ben Katzner, asked some students about their own views."
  •  "Take KARE of your money: Social shopping," KARE-TV, Dec. 11, 2009. Most everything on the [Etsy.com] site is homemade, and like the other social shopping sites, you can meet others with similar interests. 'It's the shopping experience taken into a different dimension and I think that's why people get excited about it,' says Marketing Professor John Purdy with the University of St. Thomas. 'It's really the new frontier of marketing. The ability to be with people almost 24/7 because they are connected through their cell phones,' says Professor Purdy."
  • "What's cooking: Nut-free chocolate," Star Tribune, Dec. 16, 2009. "After [Kristen] Rice was laid off from her law firm, she took Mini MBA and FastTrack Entrepreneurship classes at the University of St. Thomas and went into the candymaking business, contracting with a company committed to being a nut-free facility."
  • "Height isn't the reason super sub stands above," Star Tribune, Dec. 17, 2009. "[Substitute teacher Neil] Brackett grew up in Illinois and came to the Twin Cities as a drafter in the late 1980s, before shifting gears. He earned his teaching degree in 2006 from the University of St. Thomas. While subbing is not lucrative (he pulls in about $10,000 a year; his wife is the main breadwinner), it has been fulfilling and constant, sometimes as often as seven out of nine days."
  • "Making her mark on climate change, security," Isanti County News, Dec. 16, 2009. "Since October 2007, Shiloh Fetzek … has worked for The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), an independent think tank engaged in cutting edge defense and security research." Fetzek earned her B.A. in justice and peace studies from UST in 2000.
  •  “Nov. Housing Construction up 8.9 percent," KSTP-TV, Dec. 16, 2009. "Dr. Dave Vang of the University of St. Thomas said there are indicators of a turn around, but it's not clear what may happen when government incentives stop coming and interest rates rise." This story also aired on Hubbard Broadcasting stations in Alexandria and Austin, Minn.
  • “Ruben Rosario: Theft-of-services law's days may be numbered," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Dec. 16, 2009. "Henry 'Hank' Shea, a former Minnesota federal prosecutor, disagrees. He points out that the law was deliberately written to crack more sophisticated public corruption and white-collar frauds or scams. 'I do not believe it's unconstitutionally vague,' said Shea, who teaches ethical leadership in litigation and crime and punishment courses at the University of St. Thomas Law School. 'It may be subject to overreaching or potential misuse, but that's a different matter.'"

  •  “Editorial: After the theater, move on to reform," Star Tribune, Dec. 18, 2009. "The University of St. Thomas has launched a mulitipronged effort to address the growing lack of civility in U.S. society. The school is raising money for an endowed chair in civil discourse and has started a pilot academic program on the topic. It's also announced plans for a lecture series that College of Arts and Science Dean Dr. Marisa Kelly said 'will strive to promote discussion of important ideas without the aggression, anger and obstinacy that often cloud such matters in today's world,' according to a news release. Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham will kick off the series Feb. 16, lecturing on 'Conflict and Civility in the Age of Obama.'"
  •  “College endowments better than last year, but still down," Minnesota Public Radio, Dec. 21, 2009. "'That doesn't sound too bad at all when you consider how crazy the markets were,' said Mike Sullivan, the investment officer for the University of St. Thomas. Here's why Sullivan is relieved that St. Thomas' endowment was down only $16 million over the past year. In the summer of 2008, the endowment was $480 million. Then came the Wall Street meltdown. By March of this year, the endowment had declined by nearly a third."

  •  “Shooter Now: After announcing retirement, coaching legend gets job offers," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Dec. 21, 2009. Sports columnist Charley ("Shooter") Walters writes, "Almost immediately after the announcement last week that Dennis Denning would retire Feb. 1, the legendary University of St. Thomas baseball coach received six employment offers."
  •  “2 feet for Christmas? You better watch out," Star Tribune, Dec. 22, 2009. "Many private institutions, such as the University of St. Thomas, have slightly shorter semesters and wrapped up their finals last week. But the last exams at UW-Madison begin at 2:45 Wednesday, by which time snow and gusty winds could be hampering travel to Minnesota."  
  • "Ambition, schemes proved a criminal mix," Star Tribune, Jan. 2, 2010. "Tom Musil, a professor in the Finance Department at the University of St. Thomas who specializes in real estate studies, once taught [Dustin] LaFavre. Musil said he is surprised to hear of the trouble encircling his former student."
