  • "Retail stocks: Kroger shares rise, build foundation for sector," Dow Jones MarketWatch, Dec. 5, 2006. "A survey released Tuesday by the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis found that consumers in the Twin Cities weren't particularly happy with the Marshall Field's-to-Macy's changeover. Minneapolis is the headquarters of Macy's North, which used to be Marshall Field's. It's also the home base of Target Corp., which used to be Dayton-Hudson Corp. At that time, Dayton Hudson owned the Dayton 's stores that Target turned into Marshall Field's stores at the turn of the century. Of the 254 people surveyed, 38% said they don't shop at Macy's and 21% said they will shop there less this year than they did last year. Another 38% said they will make purchases there at the same rate frequency that they always have shopped. 'Perceptions of (Macy's) merchandise variety and quality are really quite negative among a sizable percentage of their shoppers,' said John Sailors, a St. Thomas faculty member who researched the results with two other faculty members, Lorman Lundsten and Dave Brennan. Mostly, shoppers were worried that Macy's prices were too high. "Good, who also teaches a police leadership course at the University of St. Thomas, will become chief deputy when Rich Stanek, 44, takes over as sheriff on Jan. 2. "[Revenue commissioner Dan] Salomone, who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin, taught economics at Mac Murray College in Illinois before he joined the Revenue Department.   • "Around St. Paul ," Star Tribune, Dec. 8, 2006. Columnist Joe Kimball writes, "Falling with grace: The Rev. Dennis Dease, president of the University of St. Thomas , is back at work after shoulder surgery, which he underwent after tripping on a raised sidewalk while speed-walking near campus last month. Dease told the St. Thomas student newspaper, The Aquin , that the doctor examining him had two bits of bad news: 'Your shoulder is dislocated,' and 'I'm a Johnnie.'   • "The McCarthy Tapes," Minnesota Public Radio, Dec. 8, 2006. " Eugene McCarthy died in December 2005 at the age of 89. His political legacy will forever be defined by 1968, when McCarthy turned his opposition to the Vietnam War into a crusade for the presidency. The McCarthy Tapes takes us back to the 1968 campaign through the audio recordings of the McCarthy archive."   • Sports briefs, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Dec. 11, 2006. " St. Thomas 7, St. Catherine 2: Jill Kobow had two goals and an assist to lead host St. Thomas over St. Catherine. Lauren Bradel stopped 17 shots for St. Thomas. The Tommies scored three goals in a 2:48 span midway through the second period to take a 3-0 lead.   • Education briefs, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Dec. 12, 2006. "The parish communities of Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Church of St. Luke have announced the appointment of Patrick Lofton as principal at IHM-St. Luke's School. Lofton most recently served as middle school coordinator and teacher at St. Mark's School in St. Paul. He began his duties in October at IHM-St. Luke's, a K-8 Catholic school. "Of all the challenges facing Federated Department Stores as it moves to create a new national department store chain in Macy's, this one may be the biggest: People who don't shop at Macy's think its prices are too high.
