UST competes in 2009 Recyclemania
Let the Recyclemania games begin!
Recyclemania is a college and university recycling competition promoting waste reduction on campuses. Starting this week and continuing until the end of March, competing schools across the nation will be reporting their recycling and trash data.
The results will be posted weekly at a Recyclemania, and UST will be ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or who has the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch their results fluctuate against other schools and find out who's really a sustainable campus.
Audits of UST trash have shown that more than 40 percent of what's "thrown away" could have been put into one of the 1,000 recycling containers located across the campus.
"Hauling the trash away is expensive; recycling saves and puts money back into the general funds," said Bob Douglas, recycling coordinator. "So let's help ourselves by recycling and promoting a more sustainable campus. Pitch in and show what UST can do!"
Information about what's recycled at St. Thomas can be found at the UST recycling Web site. Watch for related events taking place on campus during the competition to promote and inform the community about recycling and reducing waste.
