University of Colorado professor to discuss film, 'Run, Lola, Run'
Dr. Sonja Foss of the University of Colorado-Denver will give a lecture, "'Run, Lola, Run': A Case Study in Marginalization, Resistance and Personal Freedom," from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20, in Room 126 (auditorium), John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts.
The lecture, free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by St. Thomas' Communication Studies Department and Luann Dummer Center for Women.
The lecture will explore the nature of human agency and ways in which members of marginalized groups attain freedom within systems of domination. Foss will focus on the critically acclaimed 1998 film "Run, Lola, Run," which depicts the title character's race through the streets of Berlin in a quest to save the life of her lover.
Foss will describe three notions of personal power that marginalized individuals adopt within systems of domination – victim, supplicant and originator – and types of persuasive and tactical behaviors linked to these views. She will conclude with a provocative and unconventional theory of human agency that identifies kinds of choices human beings may make that produce genuine liberation.
