Two UST magazines win nine awards from Minnesota Magazine and Publications Association

Two St. Thomas magazines have won nine awards in the 2005 Minnesota Magazine Publishers Association contest.

The awards included six for St. Thomas magazine and three for B., the magazine of the College of Business. The awards were given out Thursday evening at the MMPA Excellence Awards ceremony in Golden Valley, and are the highest number that St. Thomas magazines have received in the nine years of the MMPA contest.

St. Thomas magazine was in the "Professional" category for magazines with a circulation of more than 30,000, and B. magazine was in the "Professional" category for magazines with a circulation of less than 30,000. The awards:

Overall Excellence: A Gold award for St. Thomas magazine (fall 2004, winter 2005 and spring 2005 issues) and a Bronze award for B. magazine (fall 2004 and spring 2005 issues).

Best Single Topic, Special Section or Special Supplement: A Gold award to Pat Nemo for the spring 2005 St. Thomas magazine series of seven profiles on graduating seniors.

Best Regular Column: A Gold award to Brian Brown for his "Q&A" column in B. magazine and a Silver award to St. Thomas magazine for the Final Thoughts column. The three Final Thoughts columns that made up the award entry were by John Bennett (an alumnus who wrote about his experience as Winter Carnival King Boreas), retired faculty member Mo Selim (on his years at St. Thomas) and Rome campus director Thanos Zyngas (on the death of Pope John Paul II).
