Dr. Dwight Nelson of the Biology Department at St. Thomas will deliver a talk on “Biology of Mind: Peeking Inside the Black Box” as part of the Philosophy Interdisciplinary Program.
The talk will be given twice — at noon on both Tuesday and Thursday, March 6 and 8, in Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts.
Phil 115 students especially are encouraged to attend, but all are welcome.
Have you ever thought about thinking? You might know “what” you are thinking, but do you know “where” or “how” you are thinking it? These seminars will provide a very brief overview of introductory brain biology (neuroscience). A few applications of modern neuroscience techniques will be reviewed that may help participants understand the physical basis of human thought and consciousness.
Also discussed will be the brain “changes” (such as rewiring and even growing new cells) that are observed when brains learn new things.
BYOB: Bring your own brains and be ready to have them rewired or possibly enlarged.
