Student Health Service will offer H1N1 'mist' vaccinations today

The University of St. Thomas Student Health Service has received its first shipment of the H1N1 flu mist vaccine. This form of the vaccine is sprayed into the nose rather than given as an injection or shot.

The Student Health Service received 250 doses in this shipment and they will be administered to St. Thomas students, while supplies last, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 4, in Room LL02, located on the lower level of Koch Commons on the university's St. Paul campus.

The two previous H1N1 vaccination clinics on campus were held in the Tommie Triage Trailer, located on the north campus between Brady and Morrison residence halls. Friday's clinic is being held in Koch Commons so students don't have to wait in line outdoors in the cold weather.

Important: St. Thomas students can receive the flu mist vaccine only if:

  • They are between the ages of 18 and 24.
  • They are not pregnant.
  • They do not have any of the medical conditions that are listed on this Minnesota Department of Health check list. (This is a check list of conditions that would prohibit someone from receiving the H1N1 mist.)

A $10 administration fee will be charged, which can be billed to student accounts, insurance or paid at the time of administration.

For more information call the Student Health Service, (651) 962-6750.

Advisory on fraudulent e-mails about state vaccination program

Madonna McDermott, director of the Student Health Service and Wellness Center, received an advisory Wednesday from the Minnesota Department of Health regarding fraudulent e-mails (phishing) about a Center for Disease Control-sponsored state vaccination program.

These fraudulent messages request that users create a personal H1N1 vaccination profile on the cdc.gov Web site. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, "the CDC has NOT implemented a state vaccination program requiring registration."

More information from the CDC, including an example e-mail, can be found at this CDC Web site.
