The Association for Strategic Planning presents “Is Walmart’s Global Expansion Strategy at Odds with Its Domestic Strategy?” at its breakfast series presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Dr. Dave Brennan, professor of marketing and co-director of the Institute for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas, will lead the workshop.

Brennan states that Walmart, the world’s largest retailer with sales of over $400 billion, 26 percent from outside the United States, has a presence in more than 30 countries under more than 50 banners. It bases its domestic strategy on operational efficiency, vendor squeeze, everyday low pricing, hands-on action-oriented culture and customer focus. His talk will focus on Walmart’s domestic and global strategic mismatch.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. followed by breakfast and networking. The presentation and discussion will be held from 7:45 to 9 a.m. in Room 203, Terrence Murphy Hall, on the university’s Minneapolis campus.

Brennan earned his bachelor’s degree in social sciences and his master’s in geography from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He earned his Ph.D. in geography from Kent State University. His research focuses on discounting, shopping centers, retail industry structure and shopping behavior.

This presentation is based on a recently published article co-written with Dr. Lorman Lundsten, professor of marketing and chair of the Marketing Department at the University of St. Thomas.
