The Association for Strategic Planning presents “Integrated Strategic Planning and Management Using the Balanced Scorecard: National Marrow Donor Program Case Study” at its breakfast series presentation on Tuesday, April 24.
Howard Rohm, co-founder, president and chief executive officer of the Balanced Scorecard Institute, and John Rudrud, strategic planning specialist at the National Marrow Donor Program headquartered in Minneapolis, will give the presentation.
The event will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. in Room 202, Opus Hall, on the university’s Minneapolis campus. Cost is $30.
Balanced scorecards have been in existence for 20 years, and many businesses and government and nonprofit organizations use a balanced scorecard system. These systems have evolved from simple KPI scoring solutions to sophisticated integrated strategic planning and management systems.
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) adopted the balanced scorecard to improve alignment, become more strategy focused, prioritize its programs and services, and measure what matters to improve results.
Rohm and Rudrud’s presentation will show how NMDP improved organization performance using the balanced scorecard as its integrated strategic planning and management system. Success and challenges will be discussed, along with lessons learned that other organizations can apply to their own strategic management journey. This presentation will appeal to anyone interested in strategic planning and management, not just balanced scorecards.
Balanced Scorecard Institute – Howard Rohm
Rohm has 40 years’ experience as an international speaker, trainer, facilitator, and consultant in strategic planning, performance management and measurement, and balanced scorecard systems. He built the Balanced Scorecard Institute from a simple information website into an internationally recognized thought leader, and training-and-consulting company. The institute provides strategic planning, and performance measurement-and-management services to hundreds of organizations in 50 countries.
Rohm developed the institute’s “Nine Steps to Success” balanced-scorecard framework in 1997 and its practitioner certification program in 2005. He has training and consulting experience in more than 100 organizations in government and industry.
He has undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees from Iowa State University and George Washington University, respectively. A member of the Association for Strategic Planning certification committee, Rohm helped create the ASP Body of Knowledge. He is a certified strategy management professional and a certified performance technologist. He has taught and lectured at five colleges and universities, and he is an adjunct professor at the Federal Executive Institute.
National Marrow Donor Program – John Rudrud
Rudrud is responsible for supporting all aspects of the National Marrow Donor Program’s strategic-planning process, including:
- Strategy development and review support
- Balanced scorecard automation design and administration
- Performance measurement analysis and development
- Organizational alignment and effectiveness
- Business case initiative management and budgeting
- Strategic plan communications and awareness
Rudrud holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Dakota and is a professional balanced scorecard practitioner (awarded by the Balanced Scorecard Institute in conjunction with George Washington University of Professional Studies). He has more than 10 years’ experience in strategic planning and budgeting at the National Marrow Donor Program. Prior professional experience includes econometric modeling and strategic planning in the telecommunications industry.
