STAR shows of ' Darfur Now' documentary tomorrow
" Darfur Now," a documentary that urges people to help end the crisis of genocide in Sudan's western region of Darfur, will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in the auditorium, Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts. The film runs about 98 minutes.
The documentary features six people coming together to discuss the issue:
- Don Cheadle, an Oscar-nominated actor and activist who also wrote, with John Prendergast, the book, Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond
- Ahmed Mohammed Abaka, a displaced builder and farmer who serves as leader and head sheikh of a camp of 47,000 other displaced Darfurians
- Hejewa Adam, a mother whose village was destroyed by Janjaweed militia and who now carries a gun to fight with rebel forces
- Luis Moreno Ocampo, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands
- Pablo Recalde, a UN humanitarian in Sudan who is leader of the World Food Program in West Darfur, establishing a program that transports food by convoy to the country's starving people – dangerous work, because the convoys are frequently attacked
- Adam Sterling, a UCLA graduate and activist who has worked tirelessly to get a bill passed that will force California to divest from companies that benefit Sudan
