St. Thomas has won five publications awards, including two gold awards, in the annual “Pride of CASE V” contest sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
The CASE V region includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The “Best Magazine” category is split by enrollment size, but all of the schools compete together in the other categories.
Here are the St. Thomas winners:
Best Alumni/Institution Magazine (3,000-9,999 student full-time enrollment): Gold Award, finishing ahead of John Carroll (silver) and Wayne State (bronze). This is the fourth straight year that St. Thomas magazine has won the Gold Award. The magazine staff includes editor Brian Brown, managing editor Patty Petersen, art director Sara Klomp and photography director Mike Ekern, and regular contributors are photographer Mark Brown and feature writers Kelly Engebretson, Doug Hennes, Kate Metzger, Jordan Osterman and Brittany Stojsavljevic.
Excellence in Photography: Gold Award, for a 10-photo portfolio submitted by Ekern. His portfolio qualified for the national CASE contest. Ekern won three Gold awards from CASE V in 2012 and 2013, when the photography categories involved individual photos (and not a portfolio).
Excellence in Feature Writing/Series: Silver Award, for the “Immigrant Impact” series published in the fall 2014 magazine. The 20-page section included four stories: a lead-in overview by Brown and profiles by Metzger, Gene McGivern and student Madeline Szempruch ’16.
Excellence in Feature Writing/Individual: Bronze Award, for Osterman’s spring 2015 magazine profile on Nick Bergeland and Rebekka Peterson, the students injured in a 2013 hit-and-run accident on Grand Avenue.
Excellence in Design/Series: Honorable Mention Award, for three School of Law admissions publications. Helen Ebert wrote the copy, Pete Borden designed the pieces and Mary Fisher coordinated the project.
