A logo designed by University of St. Thomas student has won top honors in a national contest sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Cara Chandler, who is majoring in communication and journalism, won the AEJMC contest to design a logo for the association’s 2012 annual conference in Chicago.

Founded in 1912, the association’s 3,700 members include journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals from 50 countries.

Chandler created the convention logo as part of Michael O’Donnell’s Design Concepts of Communication class at St. Thomas.

“This is a real accomplishment for Cara,” said Dr. Kristie Bunton, chair of the Communication and Journalism Department. “Many of the other entries had to come from large journalism schools around the country that have entire major programs in graphic design.”

The contest rules called for a logo that “should communicate immediately, effectively and it should be memorable. … It should also visually suggest ‘Chicago.’”
