St. Thomas places fifth in regional College Bowl competition St. Thomas Newsroom February 28, 2000 A team of five St. Thomas students won fifth place in College Bowl, the Varsity Sport of the Mind. Senior Karen Bresee, junior Pete Cullen, sophomores Andy Grover and Clay Shultz, and freshman Greg Ogin competed in the 2000 Region 10 Championship Feb. 18-19 at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. Accompanying the team was Coach Chris Baxter from the Office of Facilities Scheduling, who also is regional coordinator.This event marked the return of St. Thomas to College Bowl after an extended absence. The tournament was triple round-robin competition against regional universities.College Bowl is organized on three levels. Each school’s program hosts a campus tournament open to all students. The timing, format and organization of the tournament is determined by the school. The best players from each school (four players and an alternate, with a limit of one graduate student) compete in the regional tournament; winners go on to compete at the national level.The St. Thomas tournament, sponsored by the Center for Student Leadership and Activities, was held in October 1999. “The IV Horsemen” team of Grover, Shultz and sophomores Chad Johnson and Ryan Bannen won the UST title.A spring campus tournament will be planned to recruit players for next year.
