St. Thomas magazine, journalism prof win Page One Awards

St. Thomas magazine garnered three awards and Dr. Mark Neuzil one in the annual Page One Awards contest sponsored by the Minnesota Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The magazine earned one second place award and two firsts, while Neuzil, Department of Communication and Journalism, won an online award for a four-part series, written with Ron Way, on ethanol in Minnesota.

St. Thomas magazine won:

Magazine, Best Overall, 50,000+ circulation: Second place to the staff of St. Thomas magazine (editor Brian Brown). Minnesota Monthly placed first and Thrivent Magazine placed third.

Magazine, Best Spread Design, 50,000+ circulation: First place to creative director Sara Klomp and photographer Elias Adams for their work on the "contents" page of the winter 2008 magazine. This two-page inside cover spread included Adams' four-column photo of a stained-glass window in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas, flanked by the magazine masthead and table of contents. Said the judges: "Uncluttered and dramatic use of stained glass photo."

Magazine, Best feature design, 50,000+ circulation: First place to creative director Sara Klomp for her design of the fall 2008 story on "Climate Change(d)," a six-page Will Steger story and photos. Said the judges: "Story on climate change was effectively designed, the message was timely and the elegant photographs (by a Steger crew member during an Arctic trek) were allowed to speak for themselves without clutter."

Neuzil, with Way, won:

Online, News Web Sites, Best Continuing Coverage: First place to Neuzil and Way for their MinnPost.com series on ethanol. Said the judges: "MinnPost.com took on sacred cows to show that ethanol isn't the wonderful fuel it's touted as. The series raised serious questions about the environmental, social and political impact of the ethanol boom. Hyperlinks to original sources added credibility to the clear, explanatory writing."

The awards were presented at the Minnesota Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' annual banquet May 14.
