Sports preview: Dec. 8-10 St. Thomas Newsroom December 8, 2000 By Gene McGivern Sports Information DirectorThe busiest sports weekend of December is here, highlighted by three competitions involving St. Thomas and rival St. John’s and St. Ben’s.In men’s and women’s swimming and diving, the Tommies host St. John’s and St. Ben’s Saturday (1 p.m.) in dual meets at O’Shaughnessy Hall Pool. It’s the final competition of December for the Tommy teams.The Tommy men’s basketball team (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) plays St. John’s (1-2, 1-0) Saturday in Schoenecker Arena. A 1 p.m. junior-varsity game precedes the 3 p.m. varsity game. The varsity game will be telecast live on AT&T Broadband in St. Paul and in certain suburbs. It’s the final UST game of December.The Tommy women’s basketball team (5-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) travels to St. Joseph to battle St. Ben’s (5-1, 3-0). A 1 p.m. junior-varsity game precedes the 3 p.m. varsity clash. UST is ranked No. 3 nationally in Division III while the Blazers are rated 22nd. It’s the Tommies’ final game of December.The UST women’s hockey team (6-1 overall, 4-0 MIAC) will try to remain atop the conference race when it hosts Concordia-Moorhead Saturday (3:15 p.m.) and Sunday (3 p.m.) at Parade Ice Garden. The Tommies are unbeaten in the conference after sweeping St. Olaf and Hamline.In men’s hockey, the Tommies (3-5-2) host a pair of non-conference games this weekend at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. They play Lake Forest (Friday 7 p.m.) and St. Norbert (Saturday 2 p.m.).In wrestling, the Tommies compete in Saturday’s Itasca Community College Invite.
