Sports preview: Dec. 15-17 St. Thomas Newsroom December 15, 2000 By Gene McGivern Sports Information DirectorWith final exams and the holiday break fast approaching, the remaining Tommy varsity athletic schedule for the month is sparse. Just two St. Thomas December events remain, both this weekend, as most teams are on a three-week break from competition.In a battle of two schools that reached the national semifinals last season, the St. Thomas men’s hockey team (4-5-3 overall) hosts Wisconsin-Superior (9-3) Friday (7 p.m.) in the Fairgrounds Coliseum. The Tommies are unbeaten in their last four games (2-0-2).The Tommy wrestling team hosts Itasca and Triton Community Colleges in a double dual Saturday (noon) in Schoenecker Arena.The UST men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams resume competition at home Jan. 5 vs. Gustavus. The women topped St. Ben’s and the men lost to St. John’s last Saturday.The Tommy women’s hockey team competes again Jan. 6-7 in a series vs. St. Catherine. UST, 7-2 overall, shares first place in the MIAC at 5-1 after last weekend’s series split vs. Concordia-Moorhead.The Tommy women’s and men’s basketball teams are back in action Jan. 3 in a home doubleheader vs. St. Mary’s starting at 5:30 p.m. The men (6-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) ranked No. 24 nationally following last Saturday’s 67-59 win over St. John’s. The women (5-1 overall, 3-1 conference) are ranked seventh nationally after last Saturday’s 66-65 loss at St. Ben’s.UST students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge to all home regular-season events with their ID cards. All spectators are admitted free to home women’s hockey, wrestling and swimming and diving meets.
